Grades 7 – 9 Mathematics Teachers

Description
The focus of this professional development opportunity is problem-based learning utilizing web 2.0 tools with an emphasis on mathematics instruction. Participants

will learn good pedagogical strategies to incorporate learning with technology and create their own problem-based WebQuest aligned to the Ohio Academic Content

Standards for Mathematics housed in their own classroom Google site. The target audience is: teachers who teach at least one mathematics course grades 7-9.

Each teacher will be required to design and present a WebQuest unit. Participants can purchase 1 semester of college credit from Ashland University.

Ashland University Online Summer Workshops:

The Office of Professional Development of Ashland University is offering an online summer workshop for teachers and administrators, beginning June 7. The workshop, “PLC: Educators in Inclusive Environments” provides two learning options, each worth one hour of graduate credit. The first, “The Inclusive Classroom” (#6170 B4) is designed for all educators who support children with disabilities. The second, “General Education and the IEP,”(#6170 C4) addresses the general educator’s role in IEP development and implementation. Both sections are offered exclusively online for educators throughout the state of Ohio.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo offers free Professional Development workshops that focus on the education program associated with our new exhibit, African

Elephant Crossing. Connections to Africa is the 1-3 grade program designed to meet updated Science Academic Content Standards with a focus on the

inquiry teaching method. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, in association with Project Dragonfly and Miami University, also offers a Master’s degree program designed

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) - Ohio is sponsoring four major events in the coming months:

On April 28th the CEC will host the "Yes I Can" Program where students from Cuyahoga County will receive awards for achievements in nine categories which include academics, arts, athletics, community service, employment, extra curricular activities, independent living skills, technology, and self- advocacy. CMSD has several winners. It will take place at Polaris Career School at 10:30.

On May 17th, CEC-Ohio/Region One is sponsoring a professional development opportunity on Universal Design for Learning. We are hosting Jeff McCormick, MS, the Technology and Universal Design for Administrator for the Univ Design for Learning Center at the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) in Columbus. It will take place at St. Michael's Woodside Party Center from 4:30 PM to 7:00PM for $15.00, contact hours given.

On June 14th the Ohio Division of Early Childhood/ CEC-Ohio is sponsoring a Regional Conference for $35.00 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at Kent State Univ Student Center. Keynote speakers are Kristie Pretti-Frontczak Ph.D and Melody Tankersley, Ph.D.. Additionally, there will be breakout sessions all day which include Tiered Instruction for K-3, Inclusive Art Ed for K-3, Supporting Children who struggle with play and much much more.

On September 26 and 27th for the State of Ohio Leadership Conference for Office of Exceptional Children for ODE, CEC- Ohio is sponsoring the keynote speaker, Tim Lewis,Ph. D.

NASA Robotics Professional Development Workshops presented by Paragon TEC

Title: Bring STEM Alive with Hands-on Robotics

Location: NASA Glenn Research Center or Barbara Byrd-Bennett PD Center

Duration/Time: One-day workshops from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Breakfast & Lunch included)

Dates: NASA GRC – June 22nd and August 2nd
Barbara Byrd-Bennett PD Center – July 17th and August 16th

Target Audience: 5th – 8th Grade Teachers as well as Educators Interested in Establishing a Robotics Club

Fee: Free

CEU's: Yes

Ashland University: 1 credit, reduced tuition (call contact below for more information)

Description:  This summer Paragon TEC, Inc., a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-education company, is offering a free NASA Robotics Professional Development for Middle School Educators (5-8) or teachers interested in establishing a robotics club for middle school students. Workshop participants do not need prior knowledge of robotics and will be introduced to a highly engaging six module NASA robotics curriculum that uses LEGOTM Mindstorms NXT Robotics Kits. The curriculum has been aligned to middle school math and science Common Core Standards. During the workshop, participants will use laptops and LEGO NXT Robotics Kit to learn how and eventually teach students to assemble, program and engage a robot to embark on Mars missions!

Materials: Multi-media and hard copy curriculum materials will be provided to each educator for future use.

SMART Notebook™ Professional Development Series (18 hours)
Each participant must pay $324 for this course.

SmartEd Services Professional Development Series

Description:  Our Professional Development Series is in a format consisting of tiered modules that build upon one another. We deliver this over the course of 18 hours, ideally delivered in three - 6 hour sessions and through our unique evaluations you will get direct feedback from participants on each session. These Modules bring participants through the progression of SMART Notebook Software, taking them through three stages: Notebook Software Level One, graduating to Notebook Software Level Two and then moving on to Lesson Plan Development.

Outcomes:

SMART Notebook Software Level One sets a solid foundation.

• This is the NEED TO KNOW session – streamlines all of the knowledge that goes through the functionality of the software
• Jump start your knowledge of SMART Notebook Software basics
• Explore the possibilities of lesson design with this technology

SMART Notebook Software Level Two is the next step.

• This is the bells and whistles of the software, building on the foundation laid in Level One
• Integrate rich media into lesson activities
• Add and build on current lesson plans

SMART Notebook Software Lesson Plan pulls it all together.

• True application and development of actual Lessons leaving with 2+ completed lessons
• Maximize instructional and preparation time
• Develop ideas to build on current content included within lessons

This can be delivered in three full days 6 hour sessions or 6 half day 3 hour sessions.

Upon completion of this course teachers will be required to submit one of the following to CMSD:

3 - Individual lessons that students have completed for peer editing from other teachers (for course completion)

                                                                            OR

5 -Individual lessons that students have completed for peer editing from other teachers as well as requirement from Ashland (for Ashland credit

These classes will improve student behavior and link directly to literacy thus enabling students to comprehend their lessons and pass Ohio mandated tests.

• Lunch is NOT provided - Recommend that you bring your lunch
• Teachers will NOT be compensated
• Parking is available
• Workbook will be provided
• CEU'S are available through the BBB Center
• Graduate Credits are available to purchase through Ashland University once all 3-Full Days of SMART Professional Development are completed
