Five-Star General Honorees
THE HONORABLE
FRANK G. JACKSON
Frank G. Jackson, the 56th Mayor of Cleveland, grew up in
Cleveland, attended Cleveland Public Schools. As Mayor of
Cleveland, one of his main goals includes bringing excellence
back to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the only
district in Ohio that has a mayoral-appointed school board.
Mayor Jackson has supported the
District's vision of becoming a premier school district in the
United States of America. Education is so important to the
Mayor that he added the position of Chief of Education to his
executive cabinet and several key representatives serve on
joint committees addressing CMSD needs. With the support of
Mayor Jackson, CMSD is working vigorously to raise the quality
of life for our families by creating a school system of choice
and giving our children a competitive advantage for the
future.
THE HONORABLE
PATRICIA ANN HEMANN
Judge Hemann was appointed to the United States District
Court, Northern District Of Ohio from April 1993. For many
years, Judge Hemann has been actively involved with supporting
Cleveland Metropolitan School District students at all grade
levels by personally volunteering in our classrooms. She also
organized an effort with the Federal Bar Association that
collected over 24,000 books for CMSD students, and in
partnership with the Cleveland Bar Association, helped raise
over $20,000 for CMSD media library programs.
CAROLYN BROWN
Mrs. Brown is the President of the Cavs Better Halves
Organization and a member of the Girls Leadership Academy
Strategic Planning Committee.
Mrs. Brown has worked to ensure
that the library at the Girls Leadership Academy will bee
comfortable and wonderful place for our students to learn, to
read and to grow. She has also physically spent hours in the
library measuring, overseeing the landscaping, painting and
making sure that everything will be perfect for the students
on their first day of school. Helen Keller once said "The best
and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor
touched... but are felt in the heart." For everyone who has
had the honor of meeting and working with Mrs. Carolyn Brown
they are truly a witness of someone with a beautiful heart.
BRAYLON EDWARDS
Mr. Braylon Edwards is a starting wide receiver for the
Cleveland Browns and a rising star in the National Football
League (NFL). Off the field, Braylon has successfully begun
making an impact by providing charity and community service in
Cleveland. Through his non-profit Braylon Edwards Foundation,
he sponsors the ADVANCE 100 Program, an education initiative
which supports academic achievement among Cleveland
Metropolitan School District junior high students who pledge
and demonstrate their commitment to graduating from high
school and attending college.
HUGH MCKAY,
ESQUIRE
Mr. Hugh McKay is Partner-in-Charge of the Cleveland office
for Porter Wright Morris and Arthur LLP Attorneys at Law. In
2006, as President of the Cleveland Bar Association, Mr. McKay
partnered with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District on
the "3Rs" (Rights, Responsibilities, and Realities) program.
The 3Rs prepares students for the
Ohio Graduation Test (OGT), teaches appreciation of the U.S.
Constitution, and provides practical career counseling to
encourage students to go on to higher education following high
school graduation and to maximize their potential. Seven
hundred attorneys in teams of five visited classes at 21 CMSD
high schools throughout the 2006-07 school year.
STEPHEN C. MORRIS
In 2003, Mr. Stephen C. Morris, a retired Cleveland
businessman, established the Cleveland Schools Book Fund with
the goal to purchase new, professionally selected books for
each child in each Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3 classroom
in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Under his
leadership, the fund has grown to more than 80 donors and $3.2
million. He has been responsible for placing more than 45,000
new hardbound books at more than 40 schools in CMSD. To date,
the Cleveland Schools Book Fund has helped provide a rich
literate environment for over 14,000 children.
ANDREW RAYBURN
In 2000, Mr. Andrew Rayburn sold his company of 20 years,
Flexalloy Inc., and went onto found Big Game Capital, a
private investment company with interests in sports, music,
tine arts, finance, and distribution. Mr. Rayburn recently
founded The Human Fund, a charitable organization dedicated to
cultivating artistic creativity in Cleveland's youth.
The Human Fund effectively
supports arts education programs throughout Cleveland. Under
Mr. Rayburn's leadership, the organization has distributed a
stunning amount of funds to the Cleveland Metropolitan School
District and other Cleveland kids' arts programs.
MARC STEFANSKI
Mr. Mark A. Stefanski took office as chairman and chief
executive officer of Third Federal Savings and Loan in
January, 1988. Third Federal has been a supporter of the
Cleveland Metropolitan Schools through tutoring programs for
elementary and high school students since 1997. Under the
leadership of Mr. Stefanski, The Third Federal Foundation
donated $1 million in May 2007 to establish a family academy
tot students at risk in the Cleveland Metropolitan School
District.
